There are many great voices in pop music...and then there is Donna Summer. Born Donna Adrian Gaines on New Year’s Eve in a suburb of Boston, her childhood was filled with music. She followed gospel legend Mahalia Jackson from an early age and began singing in church choirs at the age of 10. She says, "It was then that I knew I had been given a very special gift from God... It was just a matter of how to best use it." Unmistakable at first listen, with incomparable range and power, Donna truly defines the word "artist." From her debut worldwide in 1975 with the stirring Love To Love You Baby, an endless string of hit singles followed, including four No. 1s, 14 top 10s, 10 Gold Singles and two Platinum, as well as several No. 1 multi-platinum albums. She has amassed nearly $100 million in worldwide sales throughout her tenure as a pop artist. This very special concert was recorded on February 28, 1999, at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. One of the highlights of the night was the surprise pairing of Donna and Australian chanteuse Tina Arena for the classic No More Tears (Enough Is Enough). This home video includes four unforgettable performances from Donna which were not included in the VH-1 special, from the stunning standard Someone To Watch Over Me to the sassy Don’t Wanna Work. Also featured are two songs from Donna’s forthcoming autobiographical Broadway musical, entitled Ordinary Girl: My Life, and If There Is Music There. It was truly a magical evening, from the incredible energy of the crowd to Donna’s electrifying performance.
